Life in the Time of Covid 19: Masks

One size does not fit all.

We started this Covid, Shelter-in-Place time with a shortage of masks – remember?  And, now everyone is making masks.  Or at least they should be.  We have designer masks, industrial strength masks, masks especially made for medical professionals, masks for regular people and non-professionals.  Some more creative business people and creative types have re-purposed their swim wear material for masks.  There are masks with filters, no filters, washable filters and vents.  Who knew there would be so many different styles and varieties?

Here’s the kicker:  one size does not fit all.  Unless I’m looking in all the wrong places, I have only experienced masks of one size.  I have experienced a difference in the strength and length of the elastic, but not the size of the mask.  But then, who needs elastic to wrap around your ears?  Sometimes it’s too tight or not tight enough.  A friend of mine has made masks with ties and I love them.  Not only do they tie to adjust to your head size, she’s made them from very cool Hawaiian print fabrics.  And, of course, they’re washable!  Another friend, who is a major quilter made one from tie dyed fabric.  A little throw back, but also cool.

Now, pick your color, pick your fastener, pick your print.  Masks are everyone and, if only everyone would where on when they are in close quarters, e.g., at a restaurant, or in a public place even if outdoors, this pandemic would ease.  So please, mask up!
